DEVELOPING ETHICAL ENGINEERS WITH EMPATHY

چکیده

Empathy-based skill development can help engineering students work towards professional expectations regarding ethical duties. However, there is a lack of explicit, holistic pedagogical approaches toempathy education in engineering. In BME161, first-year biomedical design course, received explicit and implicit instruction focused on empathy ethics. Students were also expected to use empathy-based tools incorporate stakeholder perspectives their process meaningful explainable ways. While this approach was successful incorporating empathybased into more needed throughout the program. Therefore, high-level framework presented based four pillars development: communication, collaboration, decision-making, values with goal achieving an interpersonal, user-centered, empathic culture students. Future will focus developing detailed actionable framework.
